Pool Deck Safety Tips

Pool Deck Safety Tips

Are you a homeowner who is looking to install an aboveground pool? If you are, you will find that you have a number of different options. One popular option is that of attaching a swimming pool to a home deck. As nice, convenient, and attractive as this may look, it is important to familiarize yourself with the dangers. When you are well informed, you can better protect yourself. And, protection is key to keeping your pool a fun and safe place to be this summer.

As previously stated some pool owners simply just install their aboveground swimming pool right next to their deck. Other homeowners take an extra step and continue to build their deck around their pool. Whichever approach you decide to take, there are a number of pool safety steps that you will want to implement. These steps, a few of which are outlined below, can help to keep the children in your home safe and reduce your liability in the event of a pool accident.

If the pool deck you will be using is directly attached to your home, it is likely that the entrance to that deck is a sliding glass door. Sliding glass doors are convenient, but they also make it easier for accidents to occur. Many children know how to open sliding glass doors, even those that are supposed to be or are locked. Sleepwalkers can easily push right through a door that is open, knocking down the screen. Unfortunately, nighttime pool accidents have a higher risk of resulting in fatalities. This is because you are less likely to be alerted to a problem when you are fast asleep.

So, what should you do? While your first thought may be to block off your sliding glass door, this can also be risky as well. In the event of a fire or another emergency, you will all exits to your home easily accessible. For that reason, you may want to refrain from jamming the door shut with piece of wood. Instead, install a small fence or gate immediately around your pool. In this case, you would have to enter the deck from your sliding glass door and then open another gate to get to the pool. This gate should be equipped with a small latch that is out of the reach of small children.

Other access points should also be examined as well. For example, many slightly elevated decks also have a set of stairs that often lead to the yard. These stairs should be equipped with a latching gate at the top. Although the children in your home are more likely to enter the pool from your sliding glass door, it is also important to be concerned about neighborhood kids or even adults looking to enjoy a midnight swim in your pool.

If the above mentioned steps sound like a lot of work, there is another approach that you can take. This step is nice, as it allows you to install your aboveground pool a safe distance away from your home, but still have a deck. This approach involves purchasing a pool with an aluminum deck and fence kit. In fact, you can also build a standalone deck surrounding your swimming pool. Just make sure it has railings and that the stairway to your pool has a latching gate.

Most importantly, supervision is a must. When a swimming pool is easy to access, like when located off a home deck, there is a higher risk of pool related accidents. If you are a parent with children in the home, you will not only want to watch and monitor your children when they are swimming, but all the time. If you find a young child missing, the pool is the first place that you should look. Finally, discuss pool safety with your children, even toddlers and preschoolers. Set rules on pool use and enforce them regularly.

Buying a Travel Solar Charger for Your Next Trip?

Buying a Travel Solar Charger for Your Next Trip?

A travel solar charger is a great purchase for anyone who likes to travel. This portable energy device is easy to use and runs off of the sun’s energy. A portable charger does not need any international voltage adapters because it never needs to be plugged into electricity. You will not have to worry about what adapter is used in the country you are going to; just bring your solar charger with you.

Portable energy has long been talked about among fanatical energy conservatists. It no longer is only for those people who are against electricity and the overuse of it. Now solar energy is becoming very mainstream and people of all economic levels are using portable solar energy.

You do not have to be extremely concerned about the environment to use solar portable energy. Although it is a great way to use our natural resources, solar power also offers great benefits to those that use it.

A travel charger that operates off of the sun’s energy can go anywhere you go. You do not need to have an electrical outlet close by to charge your cellular phone. You can be backpacking in the mountains and have your phone continually charging. If you like to go on road trips you can set your solar charger right on the dashboard and let it charge your batteries or device while you drive to your next location.

The convenience that a solar charge brings to a travelers life is not just in its portability. Solar chargers are also a great way to save money. Instead of buying multiple adapters for international outlets, you can use the same solar charger in any country you travel. You also will not have to own multiple charging devices to power all your different electrical equipment because one solar charger can be used to charge most small electrical devices.

Travelers can use a solar charger to charge their batteries. They can also use this type of travel charger to power other small electrical devices like radios, MP3 players, and even laptop computers. There are many varieties of solar chargers available with numerous accessories you can add on. When purchasing a solar charger, you are only limited by your own imagination.

Many travelers have put off buying a solar charger because they believe these types of chargers will be too technologically difficult to operate. But solar powered chargers are as simple as any other charging device. You do not need a high tech degree to operate them. Most chargers simply have to be set in the sun and plugged into your device.

Solar energy is not a new technology. It has been around for several years. The portability of solar chargers has evolved dramatically in recent years. It used to be that you would have to own a huge solar panel just to draw a little bit of energy from the sun. Today, you can buy a small single solar cell panel that can be used to charge your electrical devices and batteries.

PERIMENOPAUSE

PERIMENOPAUSE

Summary: The basics of the first stage of menopause — perimenopause.

Did you know that there are actually three stages of menopause? The fist stage which is the topic of discussion, is known as perimenopause. This is the stage when the menopausal symptoms are felt, usually a few years before the actual menopause. Some experts believe that perimenopause can last from 5-15 years while others say that it is a 3-4 year phase. However, most women experience menopausal symptoms during perimenopause than during the actual menopause or after it. A woman still has her menstrual periods during the perimenopause stage, although these are very erratic and she may find herself skipping some periods as a result of fluctuating hormonal levels. This phase usually happens to a woman between the ages of 35 and 50. Although menopausal symptoms vary in every woman, she may begin to feel some changes, either physically or emotionally, during the perimenopause stage. Some symptoms may be felt gradually over a longer period of time, while others may notice abrupt changes in a shorter span of time.

A perimenopausal woman may also start having PMS if she hasn’t had these or her PMS may become more intense. Menopausal symptoms most commonly felt during this phase are hot flushes, mood swings, urinary incontinence, and sleep disorders.

Some health practitioners suggest using hormonal therapy during the perimenopause stage to replace the decreasing supply of hormones. Since there are women who do not know that they have gone through perimenopausal, and they just suddenly realized that their menstruation have stopped, only a few are able to address the problems that come with it. There are also women who have noticed intense menopause symptoms during the perimenopause stage, but have never asked for medical advice. Some of these symptoms, if not treated, can lead to surgical procedures. These surgical procedures, among other things, are responsible for premature menopause.

Women should pay more attention to what their bodies say especially if they fall between the menopause age range. Bone loss is a likely possibility during these years. Estrogen slows down bone breakdown. So a low level of estrogen during menopause is likely to lead to osteoporosis unless you act fast. Although bone loss also happens in men, women have the tendency to accelerate bone loss more than men do. The perimenopause phase is when bone density starts decreasing without women knowing it.

Looking at perimenopause like it’s a welcome party for something like cancer, will not make the situation any easier to deal with. To successfully live with perimenopause and its symptoms would mean seeing your doctor about making lifestyle modifications and considering hormonal therapy, so a healthier life will await you during your menopause years.

Uses for Solar In Every Day Life

Uses for Solar In Every Day Life

Many a person, myself included, has gone on and on about the benefits of solar energy. While theoretical arguments are always interesting, what about daily applications?

Uses for Solar In Every Day Life

Solar energy is an important advance in the effort to save the environment. Perhaps the most easily usable and most convenient of the renewable energy sources (which also include wind and water), solar energy has been used since the beginning of time as a heating source. In the 1830’s one of the other solar energy platforms was developed, as a solar energy cooker was used on a safari. Since then, many other solar energy applications have been formulated, and almost everyone can take advantage of one of these.

One of the most common of the solar energy application is to use it as a power source. Since the 1970’s, many people have been putting solar collectors on their roofs and using the resulting collected power to run their households. While having enough solar collectors to obtain power that will run an entire house may not be common, it is becoming more so. Most of these types of solar powered homes run their appliances and other needs directly off the solar collectors’ power during the day, and use power that was stored from the solar cells in batteries at night. In this way, the homeowner can avoid ever having to use power that was generated by a non-renewable resource.

Another of the common solar energy applications is to use solar power to heat your hot water. These systems can either use passive solar energy (in the case of heating a tank of water by leaving it out in the sun) or by using solar collectors with a heat transfer fluid. These systems require the homeowner to install solar panels, behind which run tubes filled with fluid. These tubes collect the heat from the sun and transfer it into the fluid – these tubes, filled with the heated fluid, then run around a water storage system, and the heat from the fluid is transferred into the water. Another way is to have water running through the tubing and have it obtain the sun’s heat directly – this heated water is then pumped into swimming pools, so that pool owners don’t need to run a pool heater to keep their water warm.

In the last 10 to 15 years, solar manufacturers have started to develop new, creative applications for solar power. One development is the portable solar panel, a popular product used on RVs by vacationers. On a smaller scale, there are solar panel packs that fold out like a small ledger and are used to power up anything from laptops to cell phones. As time passes, new products along this line are expected to continue to come on the market.

It doesn’t matter which of the solar energy applications you choose to implement in your own home or life – even a small change to solar power over traditional power sources can help the environment. The more we can use solar energy, the less dependent we become on non-renewable resources, and the more we help the Earth.

Madonna Confesses Dance Floor Tour May Be Coming

Madonna Confesses Dance Floor Tour May Be Coming

It’s not official but Madonna may be bringing her phenomenally
successful CD, Confessions on a Dance Floor, live to a venue near
you. To date, Confessions has sold nearly 1.29 million copies in the
United States alone. It continues to top sales charts in the UK, and
Madonna was recently recognized as the female artist with the most
number one hits in the UK. It seems almost certain that Madonna’s
fan base will soon be pleading for her to finalize preparations for a
Confessions tour. How do we know Madonna may be preparing
for a tour? While not coming out and making it official, she has
made some statements that hint at the possibility.
In a recent interview, Madonna spoke about some performances
she has booked for the near future. She will be performing at the
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, on
April 30, 2006. She said, “I am especially excited about playing
Coachella before I start my own tour.” In some interviews
Madonna even talked about her vision for her next tour, some ideas
she has for its visual presentation on the stage and what the
Confessions on a Dance Floor show will represent for her.
Madonna’s plans for her tour aren’t specifically connected to
Confessions, but when she says things such as, “I want them (the
audience) to feel like they’re inside a disco ball,” it’s hard to imagine
that her vision doesn’t involve Confessions. Other statements like, “I
want a sound system in surround and the dancers personalities to
come out” indicates that a tour for Confessions is highly likely. So
what is all this excitement about?
Confessions, the fourteenth album/CD created by Madonna, is a
mix of anything you want it to be. It’s about power and
empowerment and love and its costs. In this re-invention of
Madonna herself and the disco-era, she has come back with
possibly the best work she has ever done. There are blogs and
message boards full of comments on Confessions. “I never even
liked this woman and I have to say, this is real good stuff,” one
person noted. Other comments include, “Only Madonna could bring
back disco and dance with the popularity it had in the 1970’s.”
It has been suggested that not only will she tour but that she will
focus, as she has in the past, on dance. Wherever Madonna goes
many others follow. She wants people to “get out of their seats” in
response to the music. She wants them to “have a good time
straight through and non-stop.” Considering that one song on the
CD is a hit single and she co-wrote and co-produced Confessions
with Stuart Price, (Madonna’s musical director on her 2002
Drowned World Tour and last summer’s Reinvention Tour) one
may assume that Confessions on a Dance Floor will be a visually
extraordinary concert.
Madonna, of course, didn’t do this all by herself. The genius forces
of musicality that worked with her on Confessions will no doubt
help her make the tour just as successful as the CD. Assistance
from artisans such as Bloosdhy and Avant (Grammy winners), the
producer of Madonna’s last two albums– Mirwais Ahmadzai, and
co-writer Henrik Jonback will bring the live version of Confessions
to the stage.
Madonna’s part in producing this album comes from her fascination
with post modernism and technology. In talking about the making of
Confessions on a Dance Floor she said, “I’m trying to find the
soulfulness in technology and playing with that. I would prefer to not
have back-up singers. I would rather take my own voice and layer
it and change it and put effects on it so it sounds like a lot of
different tones and timbres.”
Madonna fans know that this artist loves her craft. She is excited
about her music and passionate about bringing it to the stage. If you
haven’t heard the entire CD yet, you are in for a treat. This is the
kind of CD that requires you either find a place to relax and just
listen or occupy a space where you can start moving. There is no
typical break between the songs. This music will make even those
that don’t dance get up and move their feet. The Mistress of Visual
Artistry herself is the only one who can bring Confessions on a
Dance Floor to life on stage. Throughout the world of music, it is
rumored that this tour could start as soon as August or September
2006. Start getting in line for tickets!

Portable Solar Energy Power Stations

Portable Solar Energy Power Stations

Portable solar energy power stations may sound, to some, like a dream. They can think of many places where portable solar would be useful, such as the RV they love to take camping, or the boat they use for long fishing trips. They cannot imagine, though, that portable solar energy power stations actually do exist.

Portable solar energy power stations have many practical uses, which we will discuss later, but what is portable solar power?

Description of Portable Solar Power

Portable solar power is energy generated from sunlight, the generator being of a size and form that can be moved readily from place to place.

Most portable solar power units use photovoltaic panels (PV panels) in one way or another. Some are amazingly small, and can be carried in a pocket, while others must be moved on a flat-bed trailer or truck.

Examples of Portable Solar Power

You may already be using portable solar power without realizing it. The following are examples of different sizes and styles of portable solar power.

1. Pocket calculators have been using portable solar power for years. Expose the calculator to sunlight, and it stores solar power for use. You can then carry this solar power into a field or up a mountain track.

2. Garden lights, or lights around a swimming pool now use portable solar power. If you want to rearrange your lights, or you decide to carry one as a flashlight, the portable solar power goes with you.

3. A multipurpose portable solar power unit is the fold-out solar panel that can be carried in a case the size of your day planner. Wherever you take it, you can open the panel to charge your cell phone battery, GPS, or other similar “gadget” you carry.

4. “Powerfilm” products are paper-thin PV panels – further examples of portable solar power. These products can be easily carried to charge almost all Lithium, NiCad or NiMH batteries. You can recharge batteries for boom boxes at the beach or while camping. You can recharge your digital camera or camcorder while on a hike. As long as you have sunlight, you have portable solar power.

5. Flexible PV panels, rugged and durable, give portable solar power for hikers and campers. This portable solar power can be rolled up like a sleeping bag, and then set up anywhere. You can drop it, step on it, dampen it while crossing a stream – and it will still give you power.

6. Larger portable solar energy power stations can consist of one or more photovoltaic panels (PV panels), simple wiring for the input jack, and a battery – sometimes referred to as a power pack. A commercially-produced portable solar power unit like this may also include a small fluorescent light, and a connection to your vehicle’s cigarette lighter plug.

Examples of Innovative Portable Solar Power

Portable solar energy can, as we said, be carried with you. It can provide electrical energy when you travel to a remote third world village on business. It can provide military units with necessary electrical energy while they are on the move. It can power a small heater in a winter camping tent, or provide a reading light for campers. It is valuable and convenient.

As our demand for that value and convenience increases, portable solar power is becoming more innovative. Portable solar power is being added to clothing and backpacks. It is being added to handbags. You need never worry about cell phones, laptops or other electronics going dead again. Portable solar power is yours to use, anywhere, free.

Did you know about these products? Some are experimental, but others area on the market.

1. If you want “lady-like” portable solar power, you might choose the “Power Purse” as a lovely accessory. This purse is more than an accessory, though. It can power up small electronics. Designed by Joe Hynek in a handbag competition, this little black bag is covered with laminated portable solar power panels. It has a short plastic handle, and can easily be carried anywhere. Imagine the possibilities.

2. But a purse is not always appropriate. If you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, in a field, you might be happy to have the “Juice Bag” backpack on your shoulders. A Juice Bag is a worldwide patented portable solar power backpack. Flexible ballistic nylon solar panels make it lighter than solar bags with stiff glass solar panels. Take off your Juice Bag when you need to recharge items such as cameras, cell phones, or GPS units. It generates electricity in both direct and indirect sunlight.

3. Portable solar power is also available in a cozy jacket with multiple pockets. Hikers, military personnel, and travelers can fill the pockets with cell phone, GPS, laptop, camera, and other electronic devices. Then slip the 3 ounce portable solar power panel into a special holder on the back of the jacket, and you can generate energy for your electronics.

Portable solar energy power stations make use of these ideas and more. They may be large enough to generate sufficient electrical power for a small village, or small enough to be carried by a child. Whichever it is, portable solar power is definitely “on the go” in many places and in many ways.

Reggae Music

Reggae Music

Reggae music dates back to the very early times for the people of Jamaica. It was in the late 1960’s that people started to take notice of it around the world. Some people were influenced by it when they traveled to Jamaica. For others, it was people originally from there that brought it to other places. As the disco age was beginning to emerge, reggae was also developing its own following. While it never exploded like disco did, it has remained true to its culture of origin.

Many individuals love reggae music because it is honest and sincere. The musical content has a beat to it that is very easy to follow. It gets in your head and sticks with a person. They lyrics are also very touching because they are about real things that real people experience in their own lives. This gives the reggae music more meaning than ever before for those that listen to it.

The sale of reggae music continues to be very popular. People love to buy CD’s or download the music from the internet. They also pay for concert tickets to see their favorite reggae bands live on the stage performing. If you have never really listened to reggae music before you should find some online and give it a good listen. You may discover it has some elements you are really impressed with. It is always fun to expose yourself to new types of music. It allows you to grow personally and to explore few places you otherwise wouldn’t have.

Some people think that reggae music is a thing of the past but that isn’t true. They simply don’t realize just how many people listen to it. There are certain radio stations out there, especially on satellite radio that covers only reggae music. There are also plenty of well know artists that continue to emerge on the reggae scene.

Even though reggae isn’t as popular as other forms of music that come and go, it does have a very secure following. You can be sure it will continue to be around for a very long time. Reggae music may be different from what you are used to hearing but it is very touching and also very interesting if you give it some time to grow on you.

Shining Some Light on Solar Energy

Shining Some Light on Solar Energy

Without a doubt, solar energy is the way of the future. Solar energy production is an extremely simple process to understand. A solar, or photovoltaic, cell collects energy from the Sun. A solar cell is a semiconductor device that is constructed using photovoltaic materials. It contains no liquids or chemicals, and no moving parts. Solar cells convert sunlight into electricity.

A solar panel generally consists of a series of individual cells, which are supported by a module that allows the cells to work in unison. The energy that is captured by the panel is stored in a battery. Solar panels generate direct current (DC) energy. Many solar energy systems have inverters in them which allow direct current (DC) electricity to be converted to alternating current (AC). Most consumer products such as appliances and electronics operate on AC current.

Unless you have a vast expanse of land to house an array of solar panels, it is unlikely that you will be able to power your entire home with solar energy. However, it is possible to power a single room in your house with a small array of panels fixed to the roof of your house. Multiply the wattage of each individual electrical device by the number of hours you expect to use them each day. That combined number will be your benchmark, or the bare minimum your system must be able to generate.

There are a number of options available to consumers that are considering converting to solar energy. A basic system that can be used to power a computer and a few other small items can be purchased for approximately $1000.00. Naturally, the price will increase with the production capacity of your system. In most regions, the price of an installed system will cost somewhere in the area of $10.00-$12.00 per watt.

Solar energy is one of a few truly renewable resources that can be used in energy and power generation. Every hour of every day, the Sun blankets our planet with enough energy to sustain our global energy needs for a year. As the technology behind photovoltaic energy advances, consumers will be unable to resist the urge to convert.

A lot of resources are being put into the development of solar energy technology. Most of the major oil and energy companies have entire divisions committed to solar energy. Researchers and engineers are spending countless hours trying to develop the technology today that will vastly improve conditions in the world tomorrow. It is no secret that we cannot continue down the path we are on. Fossil fuels are no longer a feasible option for energy production. The future is solar. The future is now.

Planning A Car Audio System Installation

Planning A Car Audio System Installation

With such a wide range of components and gadget on the market for car audio systems, the big question is “Where do I start?”

First you must decide what exactly you wish to do. If you are wanting to build a car audio system for a daily driver (the car you drive back and forth to work) with good sounds, but you are not interested in competing, a system can easily be put together for under $1000. However, if you are looking for the all-out bass monster, be prepared to drop in some big bucks into your system.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when building a car audio system is planning. Get an idea of where you are going to place components, subwoofers, amplifiers, and power distribution. A lot of headache can be avoided with the proper planning!!

For the basic system, lets look at some of the components needed.

Let’s first start with the head unit (CD player). Obviously you are going to want a nice head unit. If you start with a good quality cd player, and choose to upgrade your sound system in the future, purchase a head unit that will grow with you. Some of the features you may want to keep in mind are:

1. CD changer controls

2. XM / Sirius controls (if you decide to add Satellite radio in the future)

3. Dual RCA outputs (carries signal to the amplifiers)

4. Pause button (important for competing)

5. Detachable face, or other security devices

6. High voltage line driver – this will send the sound signal at a higher voltage to your amplifier/s reducing noise and improving overall sound quality.

After you have chosen your head unit, you will want to make a decision on amplifiers and subwoofers. Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. A $30 subwoofer will be as big as a $300 subwoofer, but the capacities of each will differ greatly. Look at the power handling of each subwoofer and decide accordingly. You will want subwoofers will work with your amplifier/s (see compatibility).

You must also keep in mind the available space in your vehicle. Are you willing to give up your entire cargo area? How many subwoofers will fit? Decide on the size. Sizes will vary from 8″ up to 18″, some are square (Kicker), but most are round. Also keep in mind the resistance (ohms) of the subwoofer and make sure they are compatible with your amplifier/s (see compatibility). The subwoofer decision will also have an effect on the enclosure you decide to build or buy. For the basic system, I would recommend purchasing a pre-fabricated subwoofer enclosure. This will save you a bit of money and headache (especially if you end up building it two or three times!!). Make sure you take accurate measurement of your cargo area before building or buying an enclosure!!

Other components may be needed depending on the type of system you are building and how elaborate you want your sound to be. For the competition vehicle, figure on upgrading your alternator, adding a battery to your system (maybe more), running high quality RCA cables, power cables, ground cables, and speaker cable. You may need to add a capacitor to provide your amplifier with a reservoir of power for bigger hits from the subs. You may need an electronic crossover, an equalizer, replacement factory speakers, an amplifier for your mid-range and tweeters, additional speakers within your vehicle for staging, etc.
